The Sportage has been released back in 2015 for the European market and a bit more recently for the US customers. While the European model is all new, Kia decided to take some questionable decisions for the US model. This gets the engines of the older car and the older transmission as well. Because of that, some people started to wonder why Kia did this. Some sources suggested that they had a surplus of engines or that the US market wouldn’t like change. Well, this seems not to be true, so Kia is not at a loss. In order to fix their mistake, they will most definitely release the mid-life update of the car sooner than they planned.
Kia Sportage 2018 Price
The upcoming Kia Sportage 2018 is expected to bring design and powertrain changed to the market. The end result should be a better-balanced car than before that should be able to take its newest rivals head on. The price will stay the same as the current model. This means that the future base version of the car will start around $24,000 while the higher-end versions will inch forward over $30,000. This is still better than all of its German competitors so Kia shouldn’t really have an issue here.
The more pressing facts about the Kia Sportage 2018 is the powertrain. The current version uses the same 2 and 2.4-liter engines as the older model. These are fine in terms of output but they are among the least efficient out there. The new generation will not only get rid of both of them but it will also become more efficient and more powerful as well. The no-compromise approach will be possible thanks to two all new engines. The older 2.4-liter unit is expected to get replaced by a new 1.6-liter turbo. This inline 4 engine should deliver close to 200 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque. Also, for the first time on the US market Sportage, a 7 speed dual-clutch automatic will be used on this particular powertrain.
The older top end 2-liter engine will be replaced by another 2-liter unit. This new generation direct injected version should now offer slightly less power and torque. However, it will definitely offer better fuel efficiency as well as a more usable torque curve. Unlike the smaller engine, a regular automatic should be used. This will be needed as the engine will provide close to 300 lb-ft of torque and the 7-speed box won’t be able to handle that much.
Kia Sportage Design
Currently, the design of the Sportage is a hit or miss situation. Many people love the way it looks inside the cabin. For a car that costs just $24,000, it looks like a $50,000 Audi and that’s perfectly fine with us. The materials are great, the driving position is good and the equipment level is well above the average. There are no real disadvantages about its interior and we are happy to say that.
However, the exterior of the car has been criticized by many. The future Kia Sportage 2018 is expected to solve most of its issues. While at the back Kia did design a really nice and aggressive tailgate with a nicely integrated spoiler, the front is not as great. They decided to stick with a large grille in the middle of the car. On top of that, the headlights don’t offer any continuity, so it doesn’t look great.
2018 Kia Sportage Release Date
The new model, which should be released sometime in 2017, should offer a more similar design to the Optima. This will basically get rid of the old grille and headlights and receive something a lot classier. The end result should be a great crossover that will finally compete, in terms of design, with all those European premium rivals.
