Updated for the 2016 model year, the Tacoma is one of the latest and best mid-size pickup trucks on the US market. However, it is not perfect. The truck suffers from average fuel economy and a small interior for how big it is on the outside. In order to solve at least part of its issues, a new version is expected to be released with the 2018 Toyota Tacoma. This update would come just in time to allow the truck to compete with the upcoming Ford Ranger as well as the future Jeep pickup. In order to compete with these, the Tacoma will have to become more efficient and also more comfortable. Some of the materials used inside the cabin are also sub-par, especially when the truck is one of the more expensive in its class.
Toyota Tacoma 2018 Price
The current model starts at just over $25,000 and this is not going to change anytime soon. The TRD Pro will set you back north of $43,000 which is dangerously close to the future Ford Raptor.
Is it worth it then?
Most reviews of the current Tacoma ended up by saying that the truck is one of the most capable in its class, at least in off-road. While this is true, it is more to the Tacoma than that. The ride quality, while not as good as in the Ridgeline, still is better than in the Frontier or the base Colorado. While it is expensive, the Tacoma is usually worth the money with some minor exceptions. These exceptions will likely be addressed by 2018 MY so expect the new model to be a lot better value for money than the current truck.
2018 Toyota Tacoma Changes
Even if the 2018 Toyota Tacoma is going to be a big step forward for the model, the actual look is unlikely going to change much. The base models will more than likely remain the same as before. The same should be the case with the TRD versions. Toyota may release a new trim level specifically aimed at those looking for better on-road characteristics. Ford had something similar with the older F-150 Lightning. The Tacoma could receive a few upgrades such as a lower suspension system, larger wheels, and a new front end. All of these would make for a stunning-looking truck and it would make it the only offering of its kind. Even if it will be a niche product, this type of truck would definitely find a market and allow Toyota to shine.
What about the interior?
Like with the exterior, not that much is going to change here. The 2018 Toyota Tacoma will likely get a slightly better fit and finish as well as new features. Expect things like standard frontal collision warning and rear cross-traffic alert. The infotainment system is also very likely going to change for this new model of the Tacoma.
There are currently two engines offered with the truck. The base model gets a naturally aspirated 2.7 liter inline 4 which provides 160 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. This is actually considerably less than its rivals and it shows. The truck is less efficient and also slower. The 2018 Toyota Tacoma might receive a new base engine but it hasn’t been confirmed. We would love to see a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 but this is highly unlikely, especially on the US market. The 3.5 liter direct injected V6 is not going to change much either. This engine is likely still going to make 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. While less than the competition, the engine proved itself so far and we are sure it will continue to be one of the top offerings in its class.
The largest drawback of the current truck is the lack of a diesel. So far Toyota continued to say that a diesel is not what their customers want. However, we all know that this is not true and it seems that they finally acknowledged it. This means that the 2018 Toyota Tacoma is more than likely going to receive a diesel. The most probable contender for this is a 2.8 liter turbocharged inline 4 which can also be found on the Hilux. This engine is known to make 175 horsepower and over 300 lb-ft of torque while delivering better fuel efficiency than even the base gas engine.
