2018 Ram 1500 Spy Photos

The US truck market is a really competitive one and it is currently dominated by Ford with their all-aluminum F-150. Both GM and Ram are trying to dethrone them but this is currently not possible with the seven-year-old Ram or the five-year-old Silverado. It seems that one of the first to release a new truck after Ford will be the FCA group with the upcoming 2018 Ram 1500. Not that long ago they announced that the new truck will likely be released in the late 2017 and go on sale in 2018. So far not much is known about it but it seems it might be quite impressive. The price is still unknown at this point but we wouldn’t be surprised if the price would be the same as before.

Chassis and running gear

Only recently test mules of the upcoming Ram have started to appear but unfortunately, all of them use the old sheet-metal. However, it does seem that Ram will be using a new chassis for their large truck as well as an entirely new running gear. On top of that, like Ford, some of the body panels are expected to be made out of aluminum. This will allow them to shave quite a bit of weight from the truck without increasing the cost too much. However, unlike Ford, the bed, as well as the actual cab, will likely be made out of steel in order to increase the durability over time. It is also worth saying that all the test mules featured six-lug wheels which are a rather interesting upgrade over the older model.

It still is too early too talk about how the future 2018 Ram 1500 will look. However, so far there have been quite a few camouflaged trucks and all of them featured a longer cabin than usual. These were camouflaged in the middle between the rear wheels and the A-pillars. Sources suggest that 1500 will receive a larger cab option as well as a new bed. On top of that, while not as clear, the width of the truck might increase slightly which will allow for more space inside the cabin as well as for new engines under the hood.

Interior

So far it seems that the new 1500 will use a mix of parts from FCA’s other cars. The test mule used the steering wheel of a Pacifica and its infotainment system. This might mean that the production version will receive the latest technologies Dodge and Chrysler have to offer. On top of that, we also expected an entirely new design for its dashboard.

2018 RAM 1500 specs

While the 5.7 liter and the 6.4 liter V8 HEMI petrol engines will be discontinued from their cars, the upcoming 2018 Ram 1500 might still use them in one form or another. On top of that, the 3 liters Eco-Diesel V6 from the current model should be carried over to the new truck. However, it seems that this may receive a few upgrades in order to become more powerful and efficient than before. This time around an eight-speed automatic is likely going to be used across the range while rear or all-wheel drive will be available. Some rumors also suggested that the new Ram 1500 would receive a new V6 petrol engine, most likely a turbocharged mill. Unfortunately not much is known about this but it seems that it might be a 3 or 3.6-liter unit. This should be able to offer anything between 300 and 400 horsepower, so it should be more than capable of replacing the older V6 engine. The 5.7 liter V8 is likely going to stay only for a year or two after release and after it should be completely replaced by the new turbocharged mill.
