The Charger is a four-door muscle car which manages to remain unique in a class where most of its competitors are front wheel drive. Even though the current model has been massively refreshed back in 2010, its basic design has been released in 2005 and its shares a lot of components with an even older E Class Mercedes. Not that long ago the FCA group showcased their five-year plan which said that the new model of the car would be released with the 2018 Dodge Charger. Well, it seems that this might not be true. While we still expect the car in the late 2018, it will likely not be available for sale up until 2019 due to the fact many people started to prefer crossovers.
Dodge’s spokesman suggested a while ago that the upcoming Charger would be based on its own platform which it will share with the new Challenger. However, this might not be true. Instead, it seems that the car could use a modified Georgio platform which also underpins the latest Giulia. This is still a rear wheel drive platform which employs materials like aluminum and carbon fiber. The end result is one of the best four door sedans in the World and the new Charger should not be all that different. The price is still unknown at this point but we do not expect any big changes here.
New 2018 Charger Exterior
Many people suggested that the future 2018 Dodge Charger would not look like the ongoing model. Instead, it seems that people believe the car will look a lot like the 1999 Charger concept with the coupe-like shape. We are not so sure about this. While it would make sense for it to become sportier, Dodge would definitely benefit from offering more space inside the cabin. We suspect the truth is somewhere in between. We should see the conventional lines of a rear wheel drive car in its design such as the long hood or the short back. However, due to its size the car will likely be at least similar to the ongoing model.
2018 Dodge Charger Interior
Pretty much its entire interior is going to be redesigned from scratch. This doesn’t mean that it won’t use any design cues found on the current car. We expect the new Charger to offer a more similar design approach to what can be found on Chrysler’s newer cars such as the Pacifica. This means that the car will likely make use of a curvier design which will appeal to a much wider audience.
Engines and transmission
Because the 2018 Dodge Charger is expected to lose as much as 500 pounds it means that it is possible that it will receive smaller and more efficient engines. Early rumors suggest that it will receive a new 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 petrol unit which will be first released on the new Wrangler. This engine should be capable of 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque and it should be considerably more efficient than the old V6. Further up the range we should see all turbocharged engines. This is because most cars will have to meet certain EPA standards by 2020. Instead of the old 5.7 and 6.4-liter V8 engines we may see a 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6 offered in a few different power outputs. This engine has been installed in certain Maserati cars and it is known to make well over 400 horsepower. With the help of the lighter chassis, it should make a really good match for the new Charger. In any case, an eight speed automatic will likely be standard for the US market. If the car will be released in Europe expect it with a six speed manual as well and only with the base 2 liter engine.
