27/01/2017 UPDATE: New Toyota Supra caught during testing in the snow. Spy photos still do not reveal much. The design resembles the concept FT-1. The new Supra is expected on a later date this year.
2017 Toyota Supra Release Date and Price
This means that the Supra is still a full year away considering the new Z4 is scheduled for the first part of 2017. Many of us thought that the production Supra was going to resemble the FT-1 concept but this is not true. In fact, it seems that the 2017 Toyota Supra is going to be smaller than it, less aggressive in design and a lot cheaper than the projected $100,000 price-tag. In fact, the Supra is expected to hit the market for roughly $40,000 for a base model and up to around $60,000 for a top of the line model. This price would allow them to compete with cars like the Corvette and the BMW M4 while still being more powerful and likely faster as well.
2017 Toyota Supra Design
Unlike most of its competitors, the 2017 Toyota Supra is going to use a new platform made out of aluminum and carbon fiber. On this, the body is going to be made mostly out of aluminum with some parts made out of carbon fiber. The end result should be a car quite light for its class. Also, thanks to the fact it will be made out of aluminum, Toyota should have no problems in releasing a really interesting looking car. However, the really futuristic design of their concept is not going to be translated to the production model which is a shame. Luckily, though, the car will still borrow some of the design cues of the original, so it should be more than just good looking.
In order to keep the driver focused and just like with the previous model, the new Supra should feature an interior focused on the driver. The center console will be turned towards the driver, the dials will be easy to read and the seats should provide the best driving position. However, don’t expect a too futuristic design. Instead, the Supra might get a dashboard more similar to that of the 86 with a really clean dashboard and very few commodities.
Toyota Supra 2017 Specs
The most important part about the 2017 Toyota Supra is going to be its powertrain. So far it seems that the car is going to boast a BMW-developed 3 liter twin-turbocharged inline 6 petrol engine. This is pretty much the same setup as the original. In the base trim level, the car is expected to offer 400 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque that are going to be sent towards the rear wheels only. A 6-speed manual will be offered as standard. However, an automatic, most likely an 8 speed ZF might also be an option. The top of the line model will be a bit more different.
This is expected to be a hybrid that will also use the 3-liter engine. The output for this has been rumored to be over 550 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. This would allow the upcoming Supra to easily outrun cars like the Mustang or the Camaro while still offering the true strong point of a sports car, the way it drives.
