The Viper has been with us for more than two decades but it seems that the car will be discontinued quite soon. Because new safety regulations are in order and new emission standards will be installed, the car will no longer be compliant with the US market. This means that the 2017 model year is going to be the last to ever be made, at least from this generation. The upcoming 2017 Dodge Viper is not really going to bring anything new to the table. Dodge did release a few special editions of the car, most of which already sold. This shows that there are people out there willing to buy a Viper.
2017 Dodge Viper Release Date
The problem of the current model was the fact that it was not really a good car for anything. While on the track it was good, it wasn’t great for on-road use as an everyday car. The Corvette was cheaper, more fun and faster. Also, it is more usable, so people do prefer a car with everyday use characteristics that can also go extremely fast. Because of that, Dodge might actually release a new model for the Viper. This would be the first all-new car since it was launched and it would be their answer for the Corvette. Even though it hasn’t been announced, for now, the car is expected to be launched next year as the 2017 Dodge Viper Concept. The production model would follow shortly in order to give the Corvette a run for its money.
2017 Dodge Viper Engine
However, Dodge will have to do a lot of things right in order to make it successful. For starters, the 8.4-liter engine, despite being cool, will have to go. It simply doesn’t make enough power to be justifiable. On top of that, it will no longer comply with the latest efficiency standards so Dodge will have to find a replacement. One of the largest advantages of this engine was the massive amount of torque. However, this could easily be replaced by a turbocharged mill. The problem with this type of engine would be the weight and packaging. Despite being mounted in the front, the Viper does have a mid-mounted engine, and a turbo would have a lot of plumbing to be fitted in front of the wheels.
Our inside sources suggested that the upcoming Viper would benefit from a new type of V10 engine. This would be developed from scratch in order to make it a worthy successor of the original V10. Not much is known at this point about it. However, we do expect a displacement of around 4.5 to 5 liters as well as not one but two turbochargers. These would force air in a direct injected V10 engine that would be able to rev as high as 8,000 rpm. The end result would be more than 700 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, quite a bit more than before. Also, thanks to cylinder deactivation and other fuel saving technologies, the car should hit more than 24 MPG on the highway which would be quite impressive. The actual performance figures, while unknown, for now, will likely get quite close to the best supercars out there.
Unfortunately, this type of engine would make the 2017 Dodge Viper a lot more expensive than the competition. Because of that, we are quite sure that a second option would be added. Also, the car’s chassis will be completely revised. This time around it should be slightly larger than before but also lighter. The massively long hood with the short rear end, a trademark of the car, are likely going to be used on the new model as well. The interior, on the other hand, will finally offer more space for its passengers as well as more storage options.
