The last Ramcharger has been sold in the US back in 1996 and the main reason why it was discontinued was because the two-door crossovers were no longer selling all that great. However, not that Ford wants to bring to the market the Bronco, Dodge is likely going to follow shortly with the 2017 Dodge Ramcharger. This was first showcased a couple of years ago as a concept car, first as a joke and later as a real possibility. Unlike the previous version which was based on the Ram 1500, the upcoming model has been rumored to share some parts with the Jeep Wrangler which would make sense considering its future competitors.
2017 Dodge Ramcharger Review
However, despite that the car should be in a completely different market than the Jeep. This is because it is expected to be offered as a four-door crossover only, instead of the two doors of the original, and it is also expected to be much more expensive. This is because the Ramcharger will be aimed at a market looking at more than just pure off-road performance. Instead, the car will have to be more comfortable and luxurious than the Wrangler as well as more spacious. Some of its competitors, like the Bronco, will be more aimed towards off-road prowess.
A body-on-frame SUV might not make much sense, especially with the 2017 Dodge Ramcharger. However, in the past years, people have been looking at cars that can do it all and such a model would be quite capable of doing it. The Jeep’s chassis would easily accommodate a new four-door body, larger than that of the Wrangler. On top of that, the Ramcharger would likely be bigger than its close sibling as well as heavier because it is likely that it won’t use aluminum in its body. Like before, the actual design of the car is expected to be very similar to that of the current line of RAM trucks. The two might share the same front end and a very similar cabin. However, the Ramcharger should offer a slightly more curvaceous rear end in order to better appeal to its target audience.
Because it will have to be part of a line of cars, the Ramcharger is actually expected to share most of its dashboard with the larger trucks. However, while the dashboard should be the same, the crossover will very likely feature much better materials. As standard, it should get soft padding on the doors, armrest, and even the dashboard. All of these will allow it to feel like a more premium car and the better seats than most will allow its passengers to enjoy a truly comfortable ride.
2017 Dodge Ramcharger Specs
Instead of offering multiple engine choices, the 2017 Dodge Ramcharger might just get a single engine, something quite unusual. Because it is expected to be an off-road machine good for anything and not just another crossover, Dodge might install under its hood a diesel. In fact, the 2.8 liters turbocharged inline 4 Cummins might be the perfect fit for it. With roughly 180 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, the Ramcharger would be able to handle itself on rough roads and it would easily be capable of towing a lot more than its competitors. On top of that, the gearbox could be equipped with an overdrive that would allow the diesel to barely turn at highway speeds.
These would make the Ramcharger the perfect towing and off-road machine while not taking from the actual usability. Being a diesel and coupled with the fact it will be quite light in comparison to a truck, the Ramcharger might get quite efficient. In fact, some said that it might even get well past 32 MPG on the highway, better than pretty much any other body on frame crossover.
