The Challenger is currently the oldest muscle car on the US market but it also the one with one of the oldest platforms as well. A successor has been rumored for a long time at this point but unfortunately, the FCA group has been focusing on the crossover. Well, more recently rumors about a new car, the 2017 Dodge Barracuda, started to surface and from the looks of it, this is actually the successor for the Challenger. There is still no official information on what engines, design or even platform it is going to use but the car is definitely going to be a large improvement over the current Dodge Challenger which is average in pretty much every aspect.
Dodge said not that long ago that the successor for the Challenger is not going to be based on Alfa’s rear wheel drive platform. This comes somewhat as a surprise considering that the two are part of the same company. However, we do think that they might use a modified version of this platform or at least one based on it. This would make sense because it would mean less research and development for them and the Alfa platform is a very capable chassis. The move to a more modern platform would also allow Dodge to compete with the more modern Mustang and Camaro once again and the lighter chassis would make wonders for fuel efficiency and performance.
2017 Dodge Barracuda Release Date
Many said that the 2017 Dodge Barracuda might be out by the end of 2017. Unfortunately, a production version is only expected near 2019, meaning that both the Mustang and the Camaro will depart themselves from the Challenger.
When it will hit the market, though, the upcoming 2017 Barracuda should easily be capable of outrunning pretty much any other car in its class. It will likely be lighter, more efficient, more powerful and more modern. All of these will also make for a more desirable car which should give Dodge an edge over Ford and Chevrolet once again. Considering its name, the Barracuda might also look vastly different from the Challenger. Instead of the retro design used so far, the car might finally employ something a bit more modern with only some retro touches, just like the Camaro or the Mustang.
2017 Dodge Barracuda Interior
This trend should continue inside the cabin as well. Here, the Challenger was large and not that great in terms of materials or design. The Dodge Barracuda, on the other hand, is expected to share some design traits with the Viper or the upcoming Charger. This means a much nicer interior with less vertical areas and a more driver-friendly design. The only drawback will be the space which is certainly going to be less than in the Challenger. This is because the Barracuda will be physically smaller and even though it will get a new platform, there will simply be less space than its predecessor.
2017 Dodge Barracuda Price
Considering that the 2017 Dodge Barracuda is expected to cost between $25,000 and well above $45,000, we expect a diverse set of engines.
Dodge might finally move to turbocharged engines meaning that the base model could get a 2 liter turbocharged inline 4 unit. Further up the range a 3 liter twin-turbocharged V6, likely developed together with Alfa Romeo, should also be an option. These will range from around 250 horsepower all the way up to more than 400 horsepower. A top of the range SRT version of the Barracuda might still use a V8 but not in a regular way. Instead, Dodge may turn out to Maserati for their 3.8 liters twin-turbocharged V8. This could easily output more than any other production Camaro or Mustang while being quite a bit more efficient.
