Even though the Mustang was the first new generation muscle car to be released, GM somehow managed to get out on the market their high-performance version quite a bit sooner than many expected. The all new 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 has been showcased a few weeks ago and even though the car is still not available for sale just yet when it will be launched it will certainly become sold out in weeks or even days. This is because Chevrolet took a different approach with the ZL1. It is not the hardcore track car the GT350 R is but instead it is a more civilized beast offering a lot more power than the Mustang at likely a lower price as well.
2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Price
Many expect the ZL1 to hit the market for around $55,000 but considering it is a highly improved model over the previous generation, we really think that GM will likely sell the car for closer to $60,000, a price at which it will have much tougher competitors than the Mustang. The market availability should start sometime in the next few months but as we said, expect them to sell quite fast.
2017 ZL1 Camaro Specs
Just like with the previous model of the ZL1, the new car still uses a Corvette engine but this time, GM decided not to detune it to the levels of the older model. Instead, the 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 makes an impressive 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque from a 6.2 liter supercharged V8, the same as in the Z06. The more interesting part is that the new ZL1 is a lot lighter than before and the engine a lot more powerful as well so this time around it is a lot closer to the Corvette than any GM official would like to admit.
This will certainly make it a great car to buy especially since Chevrolet decided not to offer just a powerful engine in a basic chassis. The ZL1 comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect from a true sports car. A 6-speed manual is available as standard for those looking for pure driving pleasure but a new 10-speed automatic can also be had. This is one of the fastest automatics ever made and it will allow the ZL1 to hit 60 MPH in close to 3 seconds which is very fast for a car this cheap.
As we mentioned, the running gear has been heavily upgraded over the base Camaro and even though it still has the same basic Alpha platform as the regular car, it is a lot faster around corners. Some GM engineers suggested that the new Camaro 2017 is faster around the Nurburgring than many other pure-blood sports cars and this is mainly because it comes as standard with adaptive dampers, a lower suspension than the regular car, much larger Brembo brakes both in the front and at the back and also anti-roll bars and a limited slip differential.
The upgrades for the 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 haven’t stopped under the hood so the car features a completely revamped body kit. This makes it look tougher and more muscular with the help of wider wheel arches, larger wheels with much wider 285 and 305mm tires as well as a new quad-exhaust system. A subtle rear spoiler and a rather large diffuser have also been added and just like before, a convertible has been made available for those wanting a bit more than just raw performance.
The most interesting part about it is that the ZL1 is not only the fastest or the most powerful Camaro ever built but also the most luxurious. A premium leather upholstery comes as standard even on the base model and Chevrolet also threw in all the equipment and features they had available on their shelf as well.
